State of New York is maintaining their bridges with ten MBI 110 trailer mounted MOOG units
The New York State Department of Transportation took possession of a total of ten MOOG under-bridge units model
MBI 110. To meet their requirements they ordered trailer mounted models for all 10 units. The units are distributed throughout the state in the different regions and are operated and maintained by the state personnel.
The MBI 110 gives New York State DOT the versatility of a mid-size unit allowing them to work off either side of the bridge. They can reach up to 11 m horizontally under the bridge, with a maximum lowering depth of 6.6 m. The unit’s spacious platform of 1.2 m width allows them a maximum payload of 500 kg spread throughout the whole platform and offers 180º of platform rotation area underneath the bridge. With a width of only 2.4 m the unit does not disrupt the traffic flow on the bridge, even when erected. The ability to over bridge 1.7 m wide sidewalks and cross 1.9 m high hand rails also show its flexibility.
As with all MOOG units, these units are self-propelled once on the bridge deck with a hydraulic steering wheel system in the front; have an on-board generator to supply power to electrical outlets on the platform and come equipped with a backup hydraulic system run by a gasoline operated hydraulic pump. They have one of the industry’s best safety systems in place to ensure both personnel and equipment are always protected.
The fact that all the units are trailer mounted gives various advantages to the DOT:
One is that the units can be transported with their existing trucks thus the investment in an expensive truck chassis is saved. Also a trailer mounted unit can be easily refurbished after 15 years and will serve another 10 or 15 years whereas a truck mounted unit will face the problem that the carrier vehicle becomes worn out and does not fulfill the latest emission standard. An additional plus is in cases where the machine is working on a construction site the unit can be left at the bridge for several days or weeks without the needing towing vehicle.
